Softball NS Player Spotlight

Presenting our first ever Softball Nova Scotia Player Spotlight.
Let’s meet Emma Nickerson!

Emma started playing softball at 4 years old in the learn to play program with the Cole Harbour Comets.

Emma now plays with the U13 AA Dartmouth She Devils, and is on their way to the Eastern Canadians Softball Championships!

Emma was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in November 5 2020,
Her mom noticed she was drinking a lot of water, which Emma didn’t like. She tested her blood sugars and they were 31.5.

After a weekend at the IWK Emma was set for her journey as a Type 1 diabetic.

She struggles when she plays ball, her sugars often go low even with her insulin pump, but she never gives up, she is always trying to better herself! She feels annoyed that her body doesn’t do what it should do naturally but always perseveres.

She is looking forward to trying out for team Nova Scotia next year and is setting her sights to Collage Ball and even the Olympics!

She doesn’t mind when older kids or adults ask her about being a diabetic and playing rep soft ball, “it makes me proud I can share some knowledge with people, that it isn’t some that you need to stop doing because you have an auto immune disease.”

When younger kids ask her about her pump/Dexcom she usually just tells them she needs them to keep her alive, “ I’m not sure they would understand if I tried to explain more” ~ Emma.

Emma says “at the end of the day, this is my life now and I am learning how to live it the best I can”
